How to Make a Program Shortcut to Place on Your Desktop
- Click on Start
- Sroll up to Programs and waitfor a menu to appear to the right.
- You may have to open another menu, i.e. Microsoft Office to access programs within it.
- Choose the specific program you want to create a shortcut for, i.e. Microsoft Word.
- Be sure that program has a dark blue highlight bar covering it.
- RIGHT CLICK ON YOUR MOUSE.
- From the drop down menu left click on, "Create Shortcut."
- In the same menu as your program, you will now see the same program listed again with (2) beside it.
- Scroll your mouse so this version of the program has a dark blue highlight bar covering
it.
- LEFT CLICK ON YOUR MOUSE AND HOLD - DON'T LET GO!
- Drag your mouse over to your desktop background and then let go.
- A new icon will now appear on your desktop with a name, i.e. Microsoft Word (2).
- Put the point of your arrow cursor on the icon and RIGHT CLICK ON YOUR MOUSE.
- From the drop down menu click on "Rename."
- You will notice the name bar under the icon now has a white background with the name highlighted. At this point you can type in a new name. But if you prefer to edit the name that already exists by simply removing an item or adding some letters go to Step 16.
- Click once on this bar. You can now move the cursor in such a way as to remove (2) using your delete or backspace buttons.
- Whichever method you use to rename the icon, when finished editing, click anywhere on your desktop to set the change.
- Now when you click on this icon on your desktop you will go directly to the specified
program.
- On the desktop, to remove an icon, you can left click, hold and drag the icon to the recycle bin anytime you want. This deletes ONLY the shortcut, NOT the program. You then have to go through Start, Programs etc. to access the program you want.
