Saving Files

  • As soon as you open the program you are using (WORD, WordPerfect, Excel, Publisher, WordPad, etc), save your file and give it a name.

  • When saving a file for the first time…. Choose > File > Save as.

  • Choose a name that means something to you so you can readily identify the file when you want to open it again. You do not need to add the three letter extension for the program you are working in (.doc, .wpd, .xls, .pub, etc.) as your program will do that automatically. This enables your computer to know which program to open your saved file in. It is best to organize your saved files in My Documents.

  • When naming a file you CANNOT use certain symbols:
    * Star
    ? Question mark
    : Colon
    / Forward Slash
    \ Back Slash
    < > Arrows
    " quotations
    . period
    These symbols are all used to allow your computer and programs you have on it operate. If you use one of these symbols you will get a message telling you it is an invalid file path.

  • Once you have given a file a name, you can then click on File > Save or on the black disc in the toolbar.
