Basic Internet Definitions

Internet
A worldwide collection of interconnected computer networks. The Internet supports electronic mail, transfer of files and online connections.

WWW - World Wide Web
Merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext/hypermedia to form a global information system. Consists of graphics, sound and text files, hypertext documents and links, forms interface searching and more.It assimilates other widely used networks.

Browser
A browser is a program that allows a person to view hypertext and hypermedia documents. Netscape Navigator (a component of Netscape Communicator), Microsoft Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are examples of browsers used on the World Wide Web. There are text-only web browsers available that eliminate viewing graphics, special scripts and other media.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol
A method for moving files between computers on the Internet. Anonymous FTP allows a user to login to an FTP server anonymously, and down load files, software programs, etc. that have been made freely available.

Hypertext
Generic name for the concept of linking text documents. Key words or phrases in one document can be linked to other documents, so a user can follow the link and bring up the linked document by clicking with a mouse.

Hypermedia
Any type of resource, not just text, can be linked. Images and sounds can be imbedded in text and text can be linked to specific areas in images. Hypermedia combines hypertext and multimedia (sounds, movies, animation, etc).

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language
Used to encode and write text files to prepare the information for loading onto a Web server, and eventual viewing by a Web browser on the World Wide Web. Most software now allows automatic translation of plain text in various fonts, font styles an HTML format, eliminating the need to learn the language and its codes.
