If you are connected to the Internet via phone line you should plug your computer components into a power bar that has two phone jacks on the end of it - one for in where the cord from your phone jack will be placed, and one for out, where the cord from your computer will be placed. This will prevent any storm or brown out problems where a surge comes through the phone line and wipes out the various components inside your computer.
